Hooves for the Heart, LLC offers equine facilitated mental health and learning, equine assisted activities and learning, bovine assisted activities and learning, and camelid assisted activities and learning to the Colorado, Roaring Fork, Eagle and Gore valleys for high-risk children and youth.
Terena Thomas, CEIP-ED is the founder of Hooves for the Heart, LLC. She believes we can make a difference and help heal children who suffer from emotional problems and mental traumas by interacting with horses on the ground as well as utilizing their movement. Our program has been developed over twenty years and has been used successfully as part of the healing for over 2,000 children with emotional disturbances. Expect to see children learning valuable life lessons through experiential learning while working with the horses. Equines are wonderful teachers, and our horses have been specifically trained to work with high-risk children. Research conducted in conjunction with the University of Colorado shows there is a significant increase in self-esteem development in children that earn the experience of working with the horses.

Through the therapeutic benefits of animals and nature in an uplifting and nurturing setting, Hooves for the Heart is a place where bodies are challenged, minds embrace possibilities, and spirits are renewed. We provide the opportunity for children and youth with a wide range of physical, cognitive, and emotional disabilities to grow and develop from therapeutic, educational and recreational activities and experiences with other animals.

She has won numerous awards in Western and English disciplines. Horses have long been a passion of hers and knowing how much comfort they brought to her growing up, it was only natural for her to create a program of equine intervention for the emotionally disturbed children living in foster care with her family. Her love of horses and children creates an atmosphere of respect and honor for all living creatures.
